HRT Highlights #54

2023 Sophomore Fillies Stakes

Munnys Gold was a highly regarded filly who was sitting at 20/1 in the Kentucky Oaks future book but trainer Todd Pletcher decided to go slow and entered the filly in the Sophomore Fillies Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs going 7 furlongs. She responded with a 17 length victory in a time of 1:20.09 that broke the track record.  Her next start figures to be the Eight Belles at Churchill Downs on May 5th.

2023 Louisiana Derby

Another horse from the Pletcher barn that also was making the jump to stakes company was Kingsbarns.  Undefeated in his first two starts, he went off as the 9/2 second choice in the G2 Louisiana Derby.  Flavien Prat took him to the lead and he went wire to wire and won by 3 and a half lengths. Instant Coffee was sent off as the 3/2 favorite and finished sixth in the field of 12.

2023 UAE Derby

The UAE Derby is not usually considered the best path to take if you plan to win the Derby but after Derma Sotogake won by 3 and a half lengths the owner immediately announced he was heading to Churchill Downs.  The Japanese-trained colt has four victories in 8 starts including a 3rd in the Saudi Derby last time out.  Also headed to Kentucky is second-place finisher Dura Erede won also won the G1 Hopeful in Japan.

2023 Dubai World Cup

Japan based horses continue their run of amazing performances when Ushba Tesoro came flying late down the stretch to run down Algiers to take the 12 million dollars Dubai World Cup.  Algiers held on to second and 2022 Saudi Cup winner Emblen Road was third.  Defending champion Country Grammer finished 7th.

The Road to the Derby continues this weekend

Coming up this week are three Win and You’re In events starting with the Florida Derby where Kentucky Derby Future book favorite Forte will be heavily favored.  Tim Yakteen is bringing Reincarnate back to Arkansas for the Arkansas Derby.  It will be his first start since a third-place finish in the Rebel Stakes a month ago.  Finally in California, Tim Yakteen will send out Practical Move and National Treasure but the horse to watch will be Japanese invader Mandarin Hero
