2023 Kentucky Derby
The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby featured an international field with two Japanese-trained horses, Derma Sotogake and Mandarin Hero. But the American classic would belong to an American horse with some Venezuelan-born connections.
In front of 150,000 fans at Churchill Downs, Mage ridden by Venezuelan-born jockey Javier Castellano and trained by fellow countryman Gustavo Delgado swooped to victory in the Derby, defeating Two Phil’s and favored Angel of Empire. Morning line favorite Forte had to scratch due to a bruised foot.
2023 Kentucky Oaks
The Kentucky Oaks was won by Pretty Mischiveous who held off Gambling Girl to give Eclipse award-winning owner Godolphin their first victory in the race. Longshot The Alice look finished third and favored Wet Paint was 4th. Tyler Gaffalione rode the winner for trainer Brendan Walsh.
2023 Eight Belle Stakes
In the Eight Belles, highly regarded and undefeated Munnings Gold was beaten by Red Carpet Ready. In other races, Didia started his career in Argentina and after winning back-to-back G1’s at San Isidro came to the US and has won four consecutive races including the G3 Modesty on the Oaks undercard.
2023 Derby City Distaff
Derby day turned out to be a bad day for past BC champions as Forte was a scratch in the Derby and Goodnight Olive was 3rd behind Mantareya in the Derby City Distaff. One BC champ that did not disappoint was Codys Wish who destroyed the field in the G1 Churchill Downs Stakes and left no doubt who is the top sprinter in the world on dirt.
