HRT Highlights #64

2023 San Juan Capistrano Stakes

Starting at Santa Anita, where the closing day feature was the San Juan Capistrano going one and three-quarter miles down the hill.  Planetario came to the US about a year ago and appears to have settled in nicely as he went a course record 2:48.08 in winning the marathon event. Hall of Famer Richard Mandella trained and Hector Barrios was in the irons.

2023 Bed O’ Roses Stakes

In New York, Breeders’ Cup Champion Goodnight Olive returned to the track after a trouble filled third place finish in the Derby City Distaff. While she again had traffic issues jockey Irad Ortiz was able to guide the 5-year-old mare to her eighth victory in ten starts for trainer Chad Brown.  The mare is on a schedule that is pointing towards a return to the Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Sprint before she heads off to brood mare duty.

2023 Monomoy Stakes

Hoosier Philly was once regarded as the top two year old filly in the country but then she missed the Breeders Cup and was not shown the same form as a three year old but that all changed at Ellis Park on Saturday.  Edgar Morales got the filly to the front and the Tom Amoss trainee was never seriously challenged with multiple stakes winner Wet Paint getting second.  Time for the mile was 1:36.39

2023 Monmouth Stakes

At Monmouth Park, four year old Catnip was making his third start of the year and he pounced on his rivals late to take the G3 Monmouth Stakes for trainer Michael Stidham and jockey Joel Rosario.  Next up will be the G1 United Nations on July 22nd

2023 Eatontown Stakes

Also in New Jersey was the Eatontown stakes for fillies and mares going 8 and a half furlongs on the turf.  Consumer Spending with Samy Camacho out finished favorite Surprisingly to take the G3 event for trainer Chad Brown.  It was the fifth win for the four year old filly and her second graded stake win.
