Kentucky Derby Picks & News

The Kentucky Derby is an event like no other in the sports world. It is America’s premier race for 3-year Thoroughbreds and one of the oldest and most important sporting events. More people attend the Run for the Roses than the Super Bowl and a World Series game combined.

Held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, this racing event is much more than just a two-minute race, it’s a two-day event at Churchill Downs filled with food, fun, drinks, hats and so much more. And of course, it also offers a variety of Derby Betting Options so that you can experience “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” for yourself.

Churchill Downs Track gets an exceptionally high volume of visitors during the day of the Derby. The Run for the Roses gathers a crowd bigger than 170.000 visitors. All to watch a 1¼ mile horse race, a competition that is considered the most exciting 2 minutes in sports. The victor is rewarded with a blanket of roses and the chance to keep on the track of the Triple Crown.

Qualification

The Kentucky Derby is restricted to 3-year-old racehorses, male or female. Therefore a horse is available for the race only once in their lives. In order to qualify, thoroughbreds must be nominated to the Triple Crown and then qualify for the “The Run for the Roses” through a series of races that award points to the top four finishers.

Trivia and Facts

The Kentucky Derby is more than a race but more like a broader cultural festival. All the eyes in America are set on this competition. Tens of thousands of Kentuckians and visitors gather at Churchill Downs to participate in the various galas, dinners, and other social events that come with each Derby weekend.

The Derby gives the state of Kentucky an opportunity to show its costumes and colors to the world. The event offers the visitors flourish hats, wagers, a taste of the local cuisine, and a glance at the vast history of the competition. The Derby is the most-watched horse race of the year in the United States and there is a long day party built around a race of two minutes.

Last KD winner

Rich Strike 80-1 Long Shot, ridden by Sonny Leon and trained by Eric Reed, is this year’s Derby winner. This horse wasn’t even in the field until Friday, he drew into the Kentucky Derby field only because Ethereal Road was scratched. But he came from behind to pull off one of the biggest shocks in Derby history.

Finishing second was Louisiana Derby winner No. 3 Epicenter (4-1), making the correct exacta a 21-3 combination. Coming in third place was Blue Grass Stakes winner No. 10 Zandon, who went off at 6-1 odds. The correct trifecta combination was 21-3-10 and a $0.50 trifecta returned $7,435.35.

This year’s Derby race is scheduled for May 6th, 2023 at the historic Churchill Downs race track.
