The 2023 Preakness Stakes takes place on Saturday, May 20 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” features many of the top three-year-olds in the country.   Preakness Stakes entries and post positions will be drawn on May 16th.

Early Voting captured the 147th Preakness Stakes crown and won with final odds of 5-1. Last year Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike saw long odds at 80-1 to win on Churchill Downs Track. Rich Strike the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner did not participate in the 2022 Preakness Stakes, according to owner Rick Dawson. The decision was made by trainer Eric Reed who decided that two weeks was not enough rest for the colt. It is highly unusual for the Derby winner to skip the Preakness and forfeit an opportunity to win the Triple Crown and the 10 million dollar bonus.

How many horses run in the Preakness Stakes?

Chances are we’ll have another large field in Baltimore, though, unlike the 20-horse Kentucky Derby, the field size at Pimlico is limited to 14 starters. According to published reports, as many as 15 other runners are under consideration for the second leg of the Triple Crown. However, it is somewhat rare to see a full Preakness field of 14, as the only times the starting gate was filled to capacity in recent memory were: 1992, 2005, and 2011.

What horses will be running in the Preakness?

The Preakness Stakes future book features 15 horses and Kentucky Derby runner-up Epicenter is the prohibitive favorite.  Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath will skip the Black Eyed Susan on Friday to participate in the Preakness.  This means that trainer D Wayne Lucas will move Ethereal Road to the Sir Barton Stakes to be held earlier on the Preakness card.  Horses that will likely participate in the second leg of the Triple Crown that skipped the first will include Early Voting, Creative Minister, Skippylongstocking, and Un Ojo who missed the Derby due to a foreleg injury.
