The Belmont Stakes is the Triple Crown’s third and final leg. This year the race takes place on Saturday, June 10th at Belmont Park. We have the Belmont Stakes odds along with daily horse racing valuable information to bet on the Belmont Stakes.
The Belmont returned to its traditional 1 1/2 mile distance last year, after a shortened race in 2020 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Essential Quality rode to victory lane, winning at 6/5 odds. Hod Rod Charlie (9/2) finished second, while Preakness winner Rombauer (5/1) finished third.
Like the previous two Triple Crown races, it is one of the most popular horse betting events of the year, with Belmont Stakes future book odds available following the running of the Preakness Stakes in late May. How many horses run in the Belmont?
2022 Belmont Stakes featured as many as 16 horses of the best three-year-olds in the world. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, where as many as 20 runners are allowed to compete, and the Preakness, which can have a field of 14, the Belmont field was limited to a maximum of 16 starters. However, no renewal of the Belmont Stakes in recent times has attracted a field that large. Fifteen horses started in the 1983 Belmont, while 14 broke from the gate in 1996 and 2013.
What horses run in last year’s Belmont?
Preakness winner Early Voting was expected to wait for Saratoga, but Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike was scheduled to return to the 3rd jewel. While Rich Strike will be nowhere near the 80-1 odds he was at the Derby, he won’t be favored to win the Test of the Champion. The favorite in the Belmont figures to Wood Memorial winner Mo Donegal for trainer Todd Pletcher who has three Belmont wins to his credit. Second choice figures to be Peter Pan winner We The People. Four time Belmont winner D Wayne Lucas will send out Ethereal Road who skipped the Derby and Preakness but then easily won the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.
