2022 Aftercare Alliance Stakes Recap

The eyes of the racing world are currently fixed on Keeneland Racecourse for this year’s Breeders’ Cup. However, before the Breeders’ Cup action got underway on Friday there was a top-quality race in the form of the 2022 Aftercare Alliance Stakes. In a Grade 2 contest, ten horses took their chance in this renewal. Here is what happened.

2022 Aftercare Alliance Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile and five furlongs, dirt, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool – $350,000

  1. Next +600
  2. Heywoods Beach +350
  3. Bal Harbour +500

Next produced a career-best performance to land this year’s Alliance Stakes. Trained out of the William Cowans yard and ridden by Luan Machado, he broke quickly into stride and after just 100 meters was afforded a soft lead.

In a long race of this nature, the order of the runners remained largely unchanged until halfway up the back straight. Up front from the start, Next went about setting quick fractions, which most of the runners in the field just couldn’t compete with. Rounding the final turn, it was clear that this was going to be a contest between Next, Heywoods Beach, and Bal Harbour.

Clearly still full of running, Next kicked away from the final turn and soon set sail for the line, his two main rivals simply couldn’t handle the increase in speed and quickly started to flounder.

Next continued his charge and with little danger from anyone else, cruised to a comfortable ten-length success.

In the battle for second, Heywoods Beach plugged on gamely to beat Bal Harbour by a length into third.
