The white-faced Godolphin-owned colt broke slowly and was plumb last through the early going as Speed Boat Beach and Tyler’s Tribe laid down the early fractions, and although the 6-1 shot made ground along the rail around the turn, he found himself in close quarters behind a wall of horses at the top of the lane.

However, as soon as William Buick tipped him to the outside and daylight he found an instant overdrive and split horses with ease, surging to the lead and running down fellow European raider Dramatised to take the spoils by a length in a sizzling time of 1:02 and two-fifths. Private Creed rallied for third, a neck further back, while the favorite Love Reigns – trained by Wesley Ward, who had won the last three runnings of this race – made no show whatsoever, finishing eighth.

This was trainer Charlie Appleby’s seventh success at the Breeders’ Cup. This is his first in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, which had G1 status for the first time. Mischief Magic, a son of Exceed And Excel, was taking his resume to four-for-six on his first start at shorter than six furlongs, having finished fourth in the G1 Middle Park at Newmarket on his previous start.
