Gear Jockey has been to Kentucky Downs twice and has won the Turf Sprint both times. On Saturday, two years after his last visit, he was back in the winner’s circle after overcoming One Timer and Bad Beat Brian in a furious finish, with just over a length covering the first seven finishers.
The six-year-old had drawn a blank between times, hence his 23-1 odds, but he rebounded in style under Jose Lezcano, stalking the fractions of Bad Beat Brian until joining that rival at the top of the long stretch.
That pair came on together as the posse stacked up behind them, and when they all flashed across the line in a heap it was Gear Jockey smiling for the camera, a head in front of the favorite One Timer with Bad Beat Brian just a neck back in third.

“He has had issues but loves this course,” said trainer George ‘Rusty’ Arnold. “We missed it last year and it’s nice to be back.”
Gear Jockey, whose share of the purse made him a millionaire, earned a free pass into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and will be trained up to the race.
