The Grade 1 action at Deauville on Sunday saw both chalks have to be content with place finishes as Mqse De Sevigne defeated Via Sistina in the 2023 Prix Jean Romanet and Vandeek upset the home favorite Ramatuelle in the Prix Morny.

Mqse De Sevigne holds off Via Sistina to make it back-to-back Grade 1 Stakes victories!
The betting revolved around the classy Via Sistina but the winner Mqse De Sevigne was coming into this race under the radar after winning the 2023 Grade 1 Prix De Rothschild here at Deauville as a 12/1 longshot two back.
That was the first stakes win for the Fabre runner and she duly doubled her Grade 1 tally with a nailbiting win over the George Boughey-trained Via Sistina.

The two favorites were held up off the slow speed set by Valpolicella, with the Irish raider Above The Curve tracking the speed in the second spot.
But as they hit the top of the short stretch Mqse De Sevigne came wide in the four-lane to lead at the furlong marker but had to battle to hold off the strong closing Via Sistina who came from last and failed by just a nose under the wire.
Above The Curve held well for the third spot with Travaunance in fourth.

Vandeek makes it back to back graded stakes!
The eventual winner Vandeek was reined back from the gates and held a position in the three lane tracking the chalk Ramatuelle with the other big fancy River Tiber in the last spot.
Vandeek trained by Simon Crisford has now made it three from three and adds this prestigious two year old crown to his win in the 2023 Grade 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood earlier this month.

Ed Crisford, son of trainer Simon said: “We were behind a few horses and I saw Andrea (jockey Atzeni) looking for a gap and he couldn’t quite find a gap and I was half-thinking ‘oh no we’re not getting out here and Ramatuelle’s gone for home’. But once he got out he’s picked up really well in that ground and he’s a proper horse with a big future.”
Ramatuelle quickened and widened at the furlong marker, taking a length and a half out of the field but Atzeni galvanised his mount and Vandeek got up right under the wire with River Tiber closing late for third, and these were clear of Sacred Angel in the fourth spot.
