A clash of the generations provides the focus in the Yorkshire Oaks, the highlight of Thursday’s action at York and a win-and-in for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and the sophomores again appear to have the upper hand in a race in which they have traditionally seen off their elders.
The key to the outcome may be the weather rather than a particular line of form because the favorite Savethelastdance likes to get her feet wet and is good, but not as good when the sun shines. Conditions were perfect for her at the Curragh last time in the 2023 G1 Irish Oaks over a mile and a half, when she grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat with a final-furlong surge to lead close home and beat Bluestocking by a half-length, with barnmate Warm Heart five lengths further back in fifth.
Soft ground is very important to Savethelastdance, as it slows the others down and suits her power-packed style. She will not get soft ground here and looks vulnerable as a consequence.
Bluestocking is very progressive and off just four races is entitled to continue to move up. The faster ground will suit, and there is every chance that she can again flip Royal Ascot form with Warm Heart, who had Bluestocking three and three-quarter lengths back in third when winning the 2023 G2 Ribblesdale over a mile and a half.
The older brigade is led by Free Wind, who is better than she has shown on her last two starts as a disappointing favorite each time. Last time out she sank in the mud at Goodwood, so there is a valid excuse and today’s faster ground will help her cause, but class is a concern and she will need a career-best to play.
Then there is the fast-improving Al Husn, who completed a hat-trick when grinding it out to stay ahead by a half-length in an unsatisfactory race for the 2023 G1 Nassau over ten furlongs at Goodwood. She stretches out for the first time now and that could be an issue.
It is also a concern for Stay Alert, who ran a career-best when runner-up over ten furlongs in the 2023 G1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh last time, the victim of mild interference in the closing stages, although she would not have won. She was three lengths clear of Rosscarbery in fourth, who will be better served by today’s extra yardage but is zero-for-five at G1 level.
Karl Burke puts two in the gate, with Poptronic coming in on a high after re-rallying to beat Sea Silk Road by a neck in the 2023 G2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock over a mile and a half. That gives her a shot at the board, but she finished last in this race a year ago and this edition is just as tough, while Novakai snapped a long losing streak when romping in a stakes over a mile and a half at Newmarket but will need plenty more today.
