On Sunday, the G3 2022 Franklin Stakes headlined the card at the Keeneland Racecourse. Among three-year-old and older fillies and mares, Twilight Gleaming weakened in the final stretch, unlike Caravel, who easily triumphed.
The purse of $300,000 lured in a field of eleven three-year-old and older fillies and mares who covered the distance of five and a half furlongs. On the turf surface, grey Caravel (49-20) started off as the leading chance, settling in third at the fence, but when Tyler Gaffalione took her outside in the final stretch, he basically decided the whole race. With room to rally forward, Caravel picked it up, took command, and smoothly drew clear from the rest to bag the victory in 1m 2.59s.
Thundering Creed (197-10), alongside Star Devine (31-4), delivered an eye-catching finish from the back of the field to take second and third place, respectively.
The five-year-old victress is trained by Brad Cox. On Sunday, Caravel achieved her third G3 win and the second one in 2022, while she succeeded despite carrying one of the biggest weights here. The daughter of Mizzen Mast isn’t the most reliable runner, yet everything went into her stride this time, with the duo of finishing rivals simply too distant to actually threaten her.
Behind Thundering Creed and Star Devine, the former favourite Twilight Gleaming (5-2) had to settle for fourth place after showing the way throughout. She was returning to the Graded competition with this effort, so some excuses are passable for weakening in the final stretch, however, she didn’t remind us of the filly who scored last year’s G2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
