Eddie Read Stakes Odds, Betting Pick & Preview

The main event at Del Mar – where the surf meets the turf – on Sunday is the G2 Eddie Read Stakes which has a full field headed by G1 course-and-distance winner Beyond Brilliant and the up-and-coming Hong Kong Harry, who is unbeaten since moving from Britain.

Eddie Read Stakes

Grade 2, $250,000, 1m 1f turf, 3yo+

Phil D’Amato has won the Eddie Read three times in the last six years and is making a beeline for Sunday’s feature at Del Mar, putting four in the gate including the second-favorite on the morning-line.

That horse is Hong Kong Harry, who was nothing much in Britain but has been transformed by the move Stateside. He’s unbeaten in three at Santa Anita and made his stakes breakthrough in the G3 American on his last start, keeping on well through the final furlong to beat the rallying longshot Homer Screen by three-quarters of a length, with Tarantino a length away in third and Ecrivain continuing to disappoint in seventh place.

Hong Kong Harry stretches out another furlong but looks ready for it, and this late bloomer – he didn’t debut until October of his three-year-old campaign – should have no problem confirming the form with those behind him at Santa Anita.

Best-placed of his barnmates looks to be Cathkin Peak, third in last year’s G1 Hollywood Derby over course and distance and winner of his only race since, an allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita. He’ll be much sharper for that, while D’Amato also has G1 Shoemaker Mile third Masteroffoxhounds – that was his first start for the trainer – and AOC winner Cash Equity in the mix.

He’s not quite as good as his name suggests but Beyond Brilliant has plenty of ability, winning the aforementioned Hollywood Derby and running arguably a career-best last time when going gate-to-wire in the ten-furlong G2 Charles Whittingham at Santa Anita, beating the pace-pressing Masteroffoxhounds by a length and a quarter.

He drops back a furlong, but had previously shown that a mile wasn’t far enough and this intermediate distance clearly suits him very well. He is again likely to be a pace factor.

The shipper Tango Tango Tango has been in fine form in 2022, winning two AOCs before sticking gamely to the task when running second in the G2 Dinner Party over a mile-sixteenth at Pimlico in May. He’ll need to step up in this stronger contest but does seem on the upgrade.

It seems that There Goes Harvard is more likely to take up his entry in Saturday’s G2 San Diego, which will leave the way clear for barnmate Master Piece to draw in off the also-eligible list. The Chilean-bred has good form at this track, finishing a half-length runner-up in the G2 Del Mar Handicap almost a year ago, and will strip fitter for his reappearance in a mile stakes at Golden Gate Fields in May.

Eddie Read Stakes Betting Pick

It’s a choice between the proven form of Beyond Brilliant and the abundant promise of HONG KONG HARRY, and the latter is taken to maintain his winning streak.
