Some of the best was saved until last at Santa Anita on Saturday, when champion sprinter Elite Power signed off a great career when going back-to-back in the closing G1 2023 Breeders’ Cup Sprint with an enormously impressive show of speed.

Mott has the Power
Veteran trainer Bill Mott was the toast of the Breeders’ Cup this weekend, sending out three winners – including Cody’s Wish – and finishing the weekend on a high when the outstanding Elite Power became the third 2022 BC winner to go back-to-back with a devastating performance in the BC Sprint, putting away Gunite and Nakatomi with ease.
The 8-5 favourite was kept away from the blitzing fractions set by second-choice Speed Boat Beach, but the writing was on the wall for his rivals when he moved smoothly through the field around the turn, eating up ground with Irad Ortiz sitting motionless.
The gnarly third-choice Gunite moved past Speed Boat Beach at the furlong pole but he was instantly swamped by Elite Power, who cruised past his old nemesis and on to a dominant success by a length and three-quarters. Nakatomi re-rallied for third ahead of the weary Speed Boat Beach.

Elite Power now retires to stud with a nine-for-13 count, three G1 wins and more than $3m in the bank. It was the third win on the day for Ortiz – alongside White Abarrio and Goodnight Olive – and the second for owner Juddmonte following the victory of Idiomatic.
